Death through medication: Hadamar

After the halting of the centrally organised »Aktion T4«, the killing centre of Hadamar in Hesse-Nassau became a centre of the patient killings again after 1942. As of August 1942, Adolf Wahlmann headed the institution, to which many patients from bomb-prone areas of the German Reich in particular were transferred. Normal hospital operation was faked on the surface. In actual fact, the nurses on the wards reported to Wahlmann every day which patients should be killed. According to the decision of Wahlmann, his matrons and head nurses, the nursing staff murdered the patients on the wards with lethal doses of medication – partly in the specially set up »sleep rooms« (»Schlummerzimmern«). In this way, the staff in Hadamar killed around 4,500 patients from all parts of the German Reich between 1942 and 1945.
